Oberheim DX Project Machine

“This auction is for an Oberheim DX drum machine. This unit has sat in my closet for 15-20 years. It does power up. However it come up with a CASS error on the display. Talking with someone who works on these it may just be a battery. I cannot confirm this. The symbol prom needs replacing, it makes a car crash sound and has done so since I bought it. It is around 40 years old, needs cleaning and has stickers on it along with missing a slider knob. Comes with power cord. Unit is sold AS-IS.”

Oberheim FVS-1

“Up for sale is my Obie four voice FVS-1 polyphonic synth ca.1976. I’ve owned this for about eight years, and it was serviced in 2011:

Keybed was completely disassembled, cleaned, keys polished out, new bushings and leveled. This is the silkiest Pratt-Read you will ever lay hands on!
Power supply recapped, and all tantalum decoupling caps throughout were replaced with high quality electrolytics
All open frame pots, jacks and trimmers cleaned
Entire unit cleaned inside and out, and tolex was touched up (lid is a bit rough, but lived in storage; still some scuffs visible on base, but very presentable overall)
Several chip replacements. Some preemptive (LM324 CV buffers in the programmer) and some to resolve faults (CMOS in keyboard controller). Quality machined pin sockets were installed
Amber LEDs installed throughout (just because…)
It had two holes in the top rail of the case, and I repurposed those with mini toggles to control routing of s/h and filter mod from external MS-1a (not included). One hole on rear patch panel was plugged

All functions work great, with only exception being the patch memories – VCO tuning across the SEMs is not consistent when a patch is recalled (tuning is fine under manual operation). I never got this addressed, as I tend to not use the patch storage. The memory is pretty useless on the FVS anyway, as modulation/switch settings cannot be stored with the patch. All other functions of the programmer work perfectly (e.g. global envelopes, global quantized VCO tuning, global filter controls, LFO, etc.; the real value of the programmer module IMO). The master volume pot is a bit scratchy (sealed pot; could not clean). A few of the plastic caps on the VCO fine tuners are missing, as are two mounting screws on SEM #4’s front panel.

The good news is that other than the minor nit-picks above, the synth sounds and plays outstanding! Having four SEMs under polyphonic control is a mind blower. I will miss this synth dearly, and I’m sure I will kick myself later. I just don’t have the time to give this the use it deserves these days, and hope to find it a good home.”

“This Matrix 6R is great, I hate to part with it. Compared to any new Dave Smith Instrument this blows them away in my opinion in terms of fatness and tone. They really don’t make them like they used to. Get that creamy Oberheim sound on a budget with this highly underrated synth. This has lived happily in my smoke free studio, aside from some rack rash and a slight knick here and there its a great rack synth and won’t disappoint.”

“Selling my beloved Xpander as I am moving studios and need to drastically downsize.

It is a wildly flexible and lush instrument, going from Steve Roach to Nine Inch Nails and everywhere in between.

It has 5 LFOs and 5 ADSRs per voice and a computer controlled patching system that has clearly influenced just about every semi modular VA ever made, hardware or software. In terms of modulation and multi-timbrality it can do very interesting things. I like the sound of all the filter types and the oscillators. It is a beautiful sounding instrument.

The Xpander has worked great for me, and it passes the tuning/servicing test for all voices. Please refer to the images.”

“Vintage Oberhiem DX Drum Machine all functions, buttons, and sliders tested great. With power cord, full manual is downloadable for free online. I’m not sure about any expansion roms, but it seems that there are some extra chips and possible board enhancements through comparison with pictures of other units. The “DX sync-to-tape” board for instance is not inside any other unit I could find pictures of online. Oberheim OB-8

“This is an early model Oberheim OB-8 analog synthesizer from late 1982 and “Does Not” have factory MIDI. It has a small dent in the rear of the unit shown in the photos. Program 5 led is slightly brighter than the rest, one of the reasons for the lower price point. It looks like it was replaced before I owned the unit. I have it for almost 10 years and never had any issues. The same led comes on very dim when program 1 is pressed, please see the power on photo, it is hardly noticeable. My studio is well lit and always thought it was because the led was newer. All the programs work great! I do not ship internationally and only ship to the lower 48 states. If you have any questions please contact me. I will consider any reasonable offer. Get it while you can! Somebody “will” get this big boy if the price is right! They are selling for over $4k and the MIDI kit is cheap if you want to upgrade. I never had the need to use MIDI. “Used Oberheim Matrix 6 keyboard with the following included: power cord, foot pedal, manual, sound patches cassette, some midi cables and travel case. The unit will be shipped in the travel case along with all of the mentioned items in the case front pocket.

I tested the unit and all buttons are in working order. All output jacks are working. All keys (black and white) are working. Both shifters are working. Volume control is working. Did not get to test the MIDI jacks.

Due to the age of the keyboard, I must disclose the following items.

•The display is not working properly. I did some research and I believe that a battery may need replacing.

•Minimal body scuffs but there is one dent in the corner top of the keyboard. Does not effect the play of the keyboard.

•And finally, the foot pedal does not work properly. Not sure if it is the pedal or the jack. It may be a setting on the keyboard that controls the foot pedal but with the display not working properly, I could not figure it out. The foot pedal is sold as.” Click here to search for synths on eBay

“This is an early model Oberheim OB-8 analog synthesizer and does not have factory MIDI. The unit is in excellent functional shape. It has a small dent in the rear of the unit shown in the photos. I’ve never had any issues with the presence of this dent. I purchased the unit with this issue and the previous seller did not have issues either. I have replaced the entire keybed with new contacts and thoroughly cleaned the unit. The volume knob sometimes has a slightly scratchiness only while turning when not in use for a while which is normal for its age. All buttons and knobs work as far as I can tell. It has all the original patches as far as I know. There is nothing like the sound of an OB-8! I have purchased many newer analog synthesizers and just don’t have room for this monster. It has a lovely warm 80’s sound! I “Do Not Ship Internationally” and only ship to the lower 48 states, Please No Inquiries. The unit is being shipped “As Is” because of its age. “This Oberheim Matrix 1000 was fully functional until someone had it for a few weeks and did something to it. It will not start up now. The fuse looks good and didn’t blow but it shows no display activity now. All six voices and all functions worked prior to shut-down. It may be the power supply, or regulators, or display, or something else. Since I haven’t got the equipment or expertise for the task, it must go. No returns. “Up for auction is a vintage Oberheim Matrix 12 synthesizer. Unit has a few bumps, marks, and scrapes cosmetically, and one key is broken. Functionally I have provided two links to videos below to demonstrate that the synthesizer powers up and all keys and controls function, however it does not operate correctly. My original plan was to get this instrument properly serviced and have any issues repaired, however I have found no one in my area worthy of the task. Therefore, instead of paying to ship the unit back and forth to a proper technician, I am offering it as is, just to test the waters. The tuning sometimes passes and sometimes fails but usually fails across the board. Occasionally, as demonstrated in the videos, I can get some functionality out of the default patch upon startup, but usually just garbage sounds. From my research the issue could be as simple as replacing the power cable input, which I will do if this auction ends without a sale, as the part is available and inexpensive. I am aware my opening price is high, but there is no reserve. The question is, how bad do YOU want what has been called by many the baddest analog synthesizer ever made?!
