Yamaha TX816 Project Machine

“For sale is a rare vintage Yamaha TX-216 rack with 8x TF-1 modules. This is comparable to having a Yamaha DX7 synthesizer in rack format. Unfortunately this unit does not power up properly and we are too busy on projects to have it serviced right now. It is sold for parts/repairs, as-is, no warranties, guarantees, refunds or returns. The rack does show some wear/scratches.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

“This unit was professionally serviced. Each of the 8 TF1 modules has had its battery replaced and patches reloaded and had its electrolytic capacitors replaced as a future-proofing measure. As is very common with TX racks, the power supply will sometimes emit a high pitched tone. This does not come out the audio outputs so it can still be used for recording like this. This is a well documented issue with this model and even happened when they were new. If the high pitch bothers you, someone sells a replacement power supply. We may be willing to install one for you if you’re willing to pay for it plus labor – message us to discuss before buying.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

“This TX816 I bought from a retired Oberlin Collage professor who had it modified by Robin Whittle in Australia back in the 80s. The modifications (pictured) were meant to give the audio more head room and all 8 modules got this modification. I don’t know anything else about the mods and have nothing to compare the audio to but that it sounds great to my ears.

This unit is fully functional and all 8 batteries have been replaced with new ones about 2 months ago. It has been reloaded with all the sounds it came with from the factory. I’m not interested in ending this auction early and would like to see where the bidding ends up. Thanks for looking.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

Yamaha TX816

“This listing for a gently used Yamaha Professional TX216 Midi Rack fully loaded with 8 sound cards. The unit is a Working unit.
We got this in a large lot of Audio Recording gear that came from a local high end recording studio. We have tested it. It appears to be working. We plugged it into a Midi capable synth and was able to get sound out of it.
I know that this is a fairly rare unit especially running. We have only seen one other over the years. Synth players will be sure to love it.

We will be including a printed manual with the unit as well as the service manual.

We tested the unit by plugging it in, plugging in a midi capable synth to it and was able to reproduce sound from the unit into some test speakers. So you know we are not pro midi folks. Everything seemed to be working fine during our initial testing.

We listed this item last week but pulled the listing as one of our customers noticed the 8th card had an error light in the picture with the alpha-numerical display showing a “4”. Which we left this picture in this listing. The service manual says it is a replace battery error code.
Also the service manual had a list of self diagnostic tests you can perform on each card. We performed those tests and discovered that Card number 8 would not allow us to enter into the diagnostic testing mode. We tried 3 times.
At this point we slid card 7 and 8 out and swapped their locations. The problem followed card 8. So we slid card 7 back into it’s position and pulled card 8. We pulled the dead battery out….and it was flat dead. Discarded it and installed a battery clip along with a new battery so in the future the battery could be more easily changed.
We slid the card back into the rack. At this point the Midi rack still showed card 8 had an error code 4. However this time the card allowed us to enter into self diagnostic testing. All 8 cards pass the self diagnostic testing however card 8 still shows a low battery error code.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

“Yamaha TX816 19″ rack mounted synthesizer. Potentially up to 8 DX7’s in one box with the potential to layer and create custom voice zones on your controller as you desire.

I have tested the TF1 card in the first slot and it works as expected. The cards in slots 3 and 6 don’t appear to be getting power and cards 4 and 5 need a new battery for memory. As such this unit is only partially working. You can play off the working cards but for the unit to be fully functional it needs work. Play as is or repair to have full functionality.”

Yamaha TX216 with 7 Yamaha TF1 Modules

“This one contains 7 TF1 modules – each of these modules is contains the synth engine from the original vintage Yamaha DX7.

A new set of batteries was soldered in place so you shouldn’t have to pay anyone to do this now or worry about losing your patches anytime soon. The same bank of patches has been loaded into each of the TF1 modules. Properly tested post-servicing and working and sounding great!” Click here to visit listing on eBay

Yamaha TX816

” From Patrice Rushen’s “haven’t used this in years ” locker is a near-fully (see below) functional TX816 with all new batteries. All were replaced using coin cell holders and new CR2032 batteries for easy future replacement. All modules passed Service Manual test procedures, however, Module 7 has a dysfunctional “Individual” Led indicator. The original LED was “open”, so it was replaced, as was the Inverter Buffer chip but to no avail. The problem appears to reside in IC1 (MPU HD 6303X), however the module does toggle between “Common” and “Individual” input. I did not have that IC in stock, so it was not replaced. Nor do I have the extender card needed to dive deeper into the issue.
The power supply will probably need to be re-capped as it did exhibit some reluctance to fire up and initialize from a fully “cold” condition. Once warmed up it fired up reliably. I can install a new power supply for $300 added to the purchase price.”

Yamaha TX-816

Excellent condition Yamaha TX-816 rack mount module for its age. Well kept & maintained with a NEW (not a used replacement) power supply installed. (Note that original power supplys for these units tend to fail & start to “hum” over time which affects the overall sound quality). The new supply will last many years to eliminate the possibility of this known problem.

Also included is a brand new 3-meter Hosa STX-803F 8-channel XLR Female to 1/4 inch TRS Male Balanced Snake to connect all 8 modules.

Internal battery back-up all range between 3.2-3.3 volts, so no battery change needed anytime soon.

Also included in this sale which I’m throwing in, is a Yamaha MV-802 mixer in good condition that can be used to connect the TX-816 to better control the mixing of the modules. It will be shipped in a separate box since the TX-816 is so heavy (no extra cost to the buyer). If you do not want/need this rack mount mixer, the price of just the TX-816 reduces by $100. Let me know in advance if this is the case & I can modify this listing for you to remove the MV-802. I have a few more pics on this if needed.

I also have a CD that has manuals, sysex software to load new sounds, and a lot of DX/TX sound patches that can be sent to load into the modules.

This module is built like a tank…they don’t make them like this anymore! It’s a heavy rack mount unit pushing 27-lbs just for the TX-816.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

Yamaha TX816

“I bought this unit new in about 1985. Since then, it has been almost entirely in my smoke-free home studio. Only occasionally was it used onstage, and has always been in its flight case. I used it to do quite a few demos and 3 children’s CDs. It is in beautiful condition. The only thing wrong with it is that the tiny plastic(?) ring (grommet?) that encircles the power button is missing. I have no idea when or how that disappeared, but it does not affect the performance in any way. The 8 space flight case is included. It looks sharp and is in excellent condition.

I set up these modules so that they each generally pertain to a certain kind of sound, though some modules are more varied. For instance:
Module 1 is all bass sounds, including a great Tuba sound
Module 2 is mostly pianos and clavs.
Module 3 is mostly electric pianos and bells.
Module 4 is organs and synthy organs, which a timpani thrown in for fun.
Module 5 is mostly strings, with some percussion.
Module 6 is mostly brass and some great pads
Module 7 includes woodwinds, harmonicas, vibes, and more percussion.
Module 8 includes guitars and an assorted mix of more interesting sounds.

I very selectively searched through hundreds of sounds to choose the ones I have here. I was looking for the most musically useable. I tended to stay away from very reverberant sounds, because I figured that reverb can always be added to any sound, and obviously it can be more specifically applied in that way.

Included in the sale are the rare TX816 Operating Guide, a bunch of vintage literature, and a print-out of the names of the sounds in every module, which will help you to see how they’re organized. Each column represents a different module: 1 thru 8 – a treasure chest of great sounds. Lastly, as you will see in the photos, the winner will also receive paper copies of hundreds of more charted out DX7 sounds.

Before shipping, I will sheath the flight case with cardboard, for extra cosmetic protection.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

“This is a freshly serviced and tested Yamaha TX816. If you are looking at this you know it is basically 8 DX7s in a rack! Pair this with one of the modern software editor/programmer options and you can unlock some deep FM synthesis potential.

Before listing the synth was fully serviced so it’s ready for the next owner to enjoy.
No repairs were necessary.
All of the batteries were replaced with new ones in holders.
It was thoroughly tested and given a clean bill of health.
Factory patches were reloaded.

The unit is missing the button cap for the power switch. The switch still works but I don’t have the correct cap for it. They come up from time to time for a few bucks.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

Yamaha TX816 and Yamaha TX216

“For sale is a TX 816 and a TX 216, combined for two Yamaha MRF8 racks loaded with ten total TF1 modules. This is a great vintage digital FM synth, essentially a Yamaha DX7 in rack form. They are in good shape with some wear as expected for the age. Both racks power up, all 10 modules output sound when midi notes were input. We have not tested it further and it’s possible they may need some servicing, mostly likely just needing new batteries and presets loaded. At the very least they are at powering up and make sound responding to midi notes.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

“Very rare mega FM synthesizer – this is 8 x DX7 voice boards (MK1 DX7, 16-voice, 6-operator FM each) in a single 4u rack. each module has independant midi inputs and balanced audio outputs, also there is a master midi input that can control all voice cards at once. It is 8-part multitimbral and 128 voice polyphonic (thats 768 operators/oscillators!) and can be used in any possible split / layer configuration.

This unit was recently serviced – several minor faults were repaired (dead led’s, faulty relays and switches replaced, psu serviced, new case screws) also all 8 batteries were replaced and fitted in holders for easy swap out in the future.

It comes with 8 new balanced XLR to 1/4 jack cables, a midi cable and copies of the user and service manuals.

Amazing 80’s monster synth, sorry to see it go.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

“Just got back from serviced! Tech upgraded the power supply which is a very common reliability issue with this synth. Each TF1 module has new internal soldered CR2032 battery (will last for many years) and the 32 factory original program sounds were loaded in to each one. Incredible FM sounds! Check You tube. Everything works as it should! Only flaw is the power on button is moves slightly when press. Will try to install plastic hole plug caps if I can find one a replacement in a local stor or see if my tech can offer any solution. It can still be push on and off with no problem.

Minor cosmetic marks/scratches, rack rash mostly on the top panel. Some dents on the top panel vents. Overall it is in very good shape. Pictures also described the physical condition.” Click here to search for synths on eBay

“Yamaha TX816 6-operator FM Rack Mount Synthesizer, Great Cond, All 8 modules work perfectly. Condition is “Used”. This synth is literally 8 DX7’s in a 4-space enclosure, all of which are 6-operator, independently controllable and editable modules with each module having its own midi in port and balanced XLR output. There is also MIDI in/out/thru on the main section to control all 8 modules as 1 huge synth. Most people have used this synth to stack the same patch over all 8 modules, but varying the pitch and pan for each one to create a HUGE FM wall of sound.”

“Yamaha TX816 rack mount module, fully loaded with 8 x TF1 modules, each of which is an original Yamaha DX7. It’s in good condition and full working order, however please note that this is a 110V US import so you will need to use a step down transformer with it.

It would make more sense for me to strip this out and sell the TF1’s individually as they sell for £180 to £250 each, however I’d prefer to sell this complete so that someone else can explore the full TX816 in all of its glory.” Click here to search for synths on eBay
