“For sale is a rare vintage Yamaha TX802 FM Tone Generator. It’s tested and working. No cartridge is included. The only issue worth mentioning is the backlight is out on the screen, as common for these old units. You can still read the screen just fine, but it doesn’t have a bright green glow to it. This is like a rack-module version of a Yamaha DX7mkII. There are 128 preset and 64 user patches, 16-voices of polyphony and six digital FM Operators, with full 8-part multi-timbral operation for key mapping and/or sequencing.”

“This unit was professionally serviced. Each of the 8 TF1 modules has had its battery replaced and patches reloaded and had its electrolytic capacitors replaced as a future-proofing measure. As is very common with TX racks, the power supply will sometimes emit a high pitched tone. This does not come out the audio outputs so it can still be used for recording like this. This is a well documented issue with this model and even happened when they were new. If the high pitch bothers you, someone sells a replacement power supply. “A classic keyboard from the 80’s. I bought this about 20 years ago, and it was pretty much in the same condition then as it is today. A bit of the brown paint has worn from the casing, and there are a few scrapes. All issues are shown in the photos. The side panel on the right hand side is broken at the back, as can also be seen in the photos, and a couple of the higher white notes are slightly damaged. These is the only real bit of physical damage on the unit. I have seen replacements for these for sale on eBay. The lowest white note on the left hand side (C) does not work. It presses down fine, but doesn’t trigger any sound and doesn’t send any midi data either. All the other keys are fully working, as are the screen, the number display and all the buttons on the front. The MIDI in and MIDI out are both fully functional, as are the mono OUTPUT socket on the back and the stereo (mono L/R) PHONES socket on the front. I don’t know about the other sockets on the machine as I don’t have gear I can plug into them to test them, but I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t be OK too.
When i fired this up for the first time in a while recently, a low battery message was displayed on screen briefly. It has not reappeared since, so I think it was just because it had been off for so long (more than 5 years). I would rather leave it as it is, and leave the winning bidder to replace it if they want as I don’t want to break anything by opening it up. Also, I know that sysex and MIDI generally can be a bit of a daunting pain, so I have reloaded the factory presets and sounds. “This TX816 I bought from a retired Oberlin Collage professor who had it modified by Robin Whittle in Australia back in the 80s. The modifications (pictured) were meant to give the audio more head room and all 8 modules got this modification. I don’t know anything else about the mods and have nothing to compare the audio to but that it sounds great to my ears.
This unit is fully functional and all 8 batteries have been replaced with new ones about 2 months ago. It has been reloaded with all the sounds it came with from the factory. It also has some other scuffs and scrapes in various places, but nothing too serious. The power cable is solid with no cuts or breaks. “This is Randy Waldman’s Vintage Yamaha DX7 synthesizer keyboard! Dx7 is a well known instrument in the world. But this one in particular has an interesting history!
Randy Waldman obtained it while touring with George Benson in Japan in the early 80s! The DX7s in Japanese stores in the early 80s were pre-release demos and were not allowed to be purchased. The tour personnel convinced the store owners that the DX7 could be seen and heard on stage with George Benson that night! Because of that, they were allowed to purchase it.
In fact, they bought several DX7s! When they returned to the US they brought back the first DX7s to arrive on the US mainland! This DX7 may be the last one! Randy recalls playing the flute and harmonica sound on from this DX7 with Tina Turner live on “What’s Love Got To Do With It”!
This keyboard synthesizer was modified. It has two DX7 Memory Expansion cards. It was modified to control selection of banks with a knob. (See pictures). That programming was lost when new battery was added, but can be done again. Randy liked to have bass on one bank, horns and strings on another bank, synths another etc. The banks are available for your programming. The basic sounds are there after the new battery.
It is an old unit and looks it. The pitch wheel is not working at the moment; not sure why. The buttons and keys work, but some paint and color caps on some buttons are gone. It is significantly scuffed and scratched from many tours. But it has such a rich history! It is Randy’s personal keyboard! Add it to your collection today!”
