“I bought this synth to use in my band and studio in 1983. I haven’t played it in about 20 years but the repair shop (Spectrum Sound – Indpls) inspected everything this year. I’ve included a receipt showing the condition. “Voice 3 fails autotune (bad CEM3340), voice 4 sounds bad filter circuit issue. Many keys don’t play (bad rubber key contact strips).” The outside appearance is nearly perfect except for a single scratch visible in one of the pictures which was actually caused by the leather case with zipper I had custom made for the synth. “Oberheim Matrix 1000 6 voice polyphonic analog synthesiser.
Visually a bit tatty, the faceplate is slightly misshapen and has some rack rash and a few other small marks. The volume pot is also a little bit loose but functional.
1 of the voice chips has failed and needs replacing. I have been using the synthesiser without much problems without it as not many of the 800 presets use all the voices, but you do notice it occasionally. I purchased a new CEM 3396 narrowbody to do this but never got around to it, same story with the firmware update. Both of these are very easy pull out/push in jobs, but while it’s opened up probably worth switching out the battery for a battery holder/button battery (requires some basic soldering), although seems to be fine.
Once you get the new firmware in you have a couple of options for ‘real-time’ control. One of them is an £800-ish controller from Steroping, Another is patchbase which is around 30 quid and works on your computer or iPad.
Comes with the original instruction manual which I have forgotten to photograph but will add tomorrow.”

Ok ..here we go…Here’s our Ob DMX that’s been in our studio “forever” lol!. Recently inspected…battery has been swapped. Led’s work perfectly. Has the midi kit where the I/O was put into the side panel. The fun thing was I had a box made in which the tunings were able to be changed via using the CV port in the back. You just need a 9 volt power supply. There’s roughly 90 or so eproms that im including. You only see 53 on one side…but if you flip that foam over there’s more! This is the Made in USA version not the inferior made overseas version. It was fully overhauled by a veteran analog synth tech. The main encoders were replaced with new stock certified pots purchased by Syntaur Synth Parts. It was also calibrated and tested over and over again to ensure years of usage to come. ” Sadly, the time has come where I need to sell my beautiful Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer. This is an early 8-voice 32-program version of the instrument (serial number 813313) with the wonderful Pratt-Read J-wire keyboard, but two of the voice cards were removed before I bought it so it’s currently a 6-voice.
The synth is in very good condition on the outside and exceptionally clean on the inside. See the pictures taken in broad daylight.
I began the process of repairing the instrument, but further work is needed. The unit powers up fine, all buttons light up as normal, and the autotune runs to success. But for some reason all 6 voices are making a warbled, static-y type of sound. I don’t know why.
When I bought the instrument, the voices tuned and played perfectly, so I think the voice cards are fine. The left hand controller is need of repair. The levers are not functioning correctly and the plastic rate and depth knobs are missing.
This is what’s been done:
Replaced most of the 4000-series logic chips on the upper and lower control boards
Replaced all keyboard bushings, fixed any broken J-wires, cleaned the bus bar and all and leveled the keys
Replaced the battery
Cleaned all pots
I am not a certified technician and it became clear to me the extent of the repairs are beyond my capabilities. This is a great synth with the rare P&R keyboard. Sadly, the time has come for me to pass the baton to someone who can complete the work.” Click here to search for synths on eBay

“I’m the original owner of this Oberheim Matrix 6R analog synthesizer module. Originally released and built in 1986, these rack mounted synths were emblematic of that Oberheim sound – thick, synthesized waveforms. I’ve had this rack mounted in my personal smoke free studio since I purchased it in the late 80s. It’s in excellent condition, with only a few rack rash marks. I recently tested it out, all seems to work well. Software version 2.13.
Although it doesn’t currently need one, I recently bought a back up battery, which I’ll send along for those who know how to change it. I also have the original manual and a cassette that came with it, containing 1000 sounds.
