“This unit went has been sitting in my studio rack, used very little since 2003. After recently taking it out for testing, here is what I found. The unit powers up just fine. Midi signals are received just fine. Sounds are great. Audio output at the rear 1/4 inch output jacks is only present at the LEFT/MONO jack. Headphone out jack works normally both left and right. No issues with switches. The front panel is in very nice cosmetic condition, but the sides have some surface stratches from being pulled in and out of racks(all pictures are of the actual unit). “Vintage Oberheim OB-X 8-Voice Synthesizer from 1979 with Encore Midi Retrofit – in excellent original condition.

This Oberheim OB-X is a 61 key, polyphonic analog synthesizer, featuring dual oscillators (with sync and FM), noise generator, resonant 12dB low pass filter, dual ADSR envelopes, an LFO, 32 presets, tape interface, and CV IO.

I’m a composer for TV, film and video games and I’ve used this OB-X extensively since I bought it the ’90s…sadly I don’t use it like I use to and it’s time to pass it along to someone that will love it as much as I have over the years. I remember searching long and hard before I found this particular OB-X, I believe I’m the second owner…the first owner took exception care of it before I got it.

This OB-X is most likely a Rev1 built in 1979. Over the years I’ve seen folks replacing caps, resisters, mini trim pots, etc. on their vintage synths and whoever buys this OB-X may choose to do the same – but it still has all the original electronic parts and components and works great for me and sounds incredible! I’ve done two mods since I bought it, the Encore Midi Retrofit was installed back in the ’90s and I replaced the memory backup battery a few years ago. The only thing not working is the led on the Noise “Half” Button selector that doesn’t light up when turned on, it was like that when I bought it.

The Autotune works great, especially after the synth has warmed up for about 30 minutes. The original eight voice cards are in tune all across the keyboard and sound big and fat – but if you want them all in pitch perfect tuning you could have a true synth technician/specialist to do a calibration-tuning on the all eight cards/voices. To me, a slight variance in pitch on the collective eight voices is how I remember these synths sounding from the 80s:)

I’ve kept it in my smoke free studio ever since I bought it in the ’90s with a cover when not being used. The keyboard is really clean and great looking. The letters and screening are exceptionally bright and sharp. There are marks on the bottom, that’s the way I got it (see photos) and a few small scratches on the external metal casing. The side panels are in great condition (not real wood but they look fantastic). Some of the screws look like they might have been replaced but they all look like what I think the original screws look like. The keyboard is in excellent shape, and all keys feel in great shape and work well with no glitching.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

“This 1986 Matrix 6 is in superb condition! Purchased from Switched On in Austin, TX over the summer. Techs there replaced the LCD, internal battery and updated the IOS & reinitialized the presets 🙂 all keys and membranes work great. selling because i recently moved and no longer have the space.

It does have a minor issue… the right output is VERY quiet. Most likely a 50$ fix.. teks at switched on explained it most likely got jostled loose during shipping.

“I am the 2nd owner of this. I have had it for 20 years, never gigged, just home use. All caps replaced years ago. Midi added. There was some feature put in by the original owner that I removed so there’s a small row of plugged screw holes on the top left of the unit.

I had the anvil case made. It looks near perfect with only a couple of small scratches to the top of the case. Working well, awesome sound. Programs fine. No problems to speak of. ZERO corrosion or paint chipping. This one is probably the cleanest one available right now. “Up for sale is the cleanest Oberheim OB-8 you will ever come across anywhere and I’m very confident about this statement as I am always in the market searching and looking at all Oberheiims that come on the market and I’ve been doing that for years. I have never seen anything near this clean and not only clean but also healthy.

I recently purchased a brand new upgraded keybed from UK from a small company that made limited number of upgrade keybed a for OB-8’s. I was lucky enough to buy one and have mine installed which not only made this unit reliable for life as we all know how the OB8 keybed gives issues due to connectors but also the feel of it is like million dollars. The new keybed makes playing this unit give you the feel of a brand new synth. It works perfectly too. It was made to fit 100% and I’m extremely satisfied with the result.

The unit was just fully serviced by a very good tech from Valley Sound in North Hollywood California at the time of the keybed installation. This was done just less then a month ago. I also purchased and added custom made side panels with upgraded golden screws which makes it look so much better. The unit is free of any imperfections as you will see. There is only one scratch on it which was very professionally touched up. The mighty and classic Oberheim sound – as heard on all your favorite late 80’s to early 90’s synth hits – in a 1U rack.
The “1000” refers to the ridiculous (especially for the era) number of presets, classified as 195 keyboard sounds, 118 strings, 130 woodwinds and percs, 239 synthesizer, 119 bass, 74 lead, and 125 effects. It’s the same engine as the Matrix 6 and 6R, with 6 voices – each having 2 DCO’s, a low pass filter, 2 VCA’s, 3 envelope generators, 2 LFO’s, and 2 ramp gens.

This thing will eat for plug-ins for breakfast. It’s yummy warm for pads, punchy for bass, snappy for leads, and in true Oberheim style the brass patches have that reassuring foomf. OK – I just made that up, but it sounds great!

Overall condition is good – surface scratching from rack mounting and something took a chomp out of the lower right side rack ear (doesn’t effect the ability to slide it into a rack and be secured by the other three screws – hardly noticeable once rack’d.) Looks like some of the screws on the faceplate aren’t original so maybe it had some surgery at some point. I’m not the original owner but it has spent the past 20 years in my care under loving climate controlled smoke free studio conditions.

Buttons are responsive, audio output is clean and free from noise, LED’s are nice and bright – all functions tested and working.

When pared with the Ctrlr software (or any of many other editors) the true depth and power of this machine comes to life. It has the OS1.2 update and works well with MIDI controllers.

It has always served me well – now it’s looking for a new home so it can continue to make wonderful sounds for a long time to come.”

“I’m the original owner. Bought it some time in the late 80’s or early 90’s. Used it on various commercials and multi-media projects until around 2004, when I left the biz. It’s been sitting in a rack in my smoke-free, personal studio since then. It hasn’t even been powered up much in the last 17 years. It was in very good cosmetic condition, until I tried to clean the sticky residue from a label off the top left front the other day. That cleaning solution caused the finish to smear and look ugly. I’ve tried to provide several pictures and angles of that discoloration so that you can see it clearly. There’s also a light scratch in the upper right part of the display.
