“Unfortunately, this unit is not outputting any sound, so I am selling it “as is, not returnable, for parts or repair.” I don’t know if the issue with no sound is because I have a bad midi cable going into it, if it needs a new battery (which I believe is a common problem in these older synth modules), or if there’s something else that needs to be repaired. In any case, I’ll be offering it for much less than a fully-working unit, so it may be a great value for someone who can troubleshoot and repair it.
It comes with the EX-8000 unit (with attached rack ears) and the power cord. That’s it. Find the manual and other information online. “This vintage Korg MS20 keyboard synthesizer, originally released in 1978, is a classic piece of retro equipment that any musician would love to have in their collection. With its semi-modular design, it offers endless possibilities for creating unique and original sounds. This one comes in excellent condition, believed to be fully operational, but I haven’t tested every single parameter so this is not a guarantee! All keys and knobs are working as expected though and all insert points look clean. Serial number is below 150k which indicates that this is the Mk1 model with the better filter. “Originally purchased from RubADub in 2008. It’s been racked since, in a clean, smoke-free studio. There are two cosmetic issues to note, but the unit is fully functional. 1. The upper right corner of the rack ear is bent. It doesn’t prevent mounting, so it’s purely cosmetic. 2. My insurer used to require use of smart ink, which I tried to remove before selling with isopropyl alcohol. It did remove it mostly, but in the right light you can still spot it. Given that the ink was mainly transparent to begin with, this is a really minor thing to note, but I just wanted to fully disclose. I’ve photographed both of these here. Comes with manual and original PSU, but not the original box. “Here’s an amazing string synth I picked up I think in 2009. It’s an amazing synth, and I’m reluctant to let it go nut I need to clear out a lot of my equipment in preparation for a change of use for my studio.
It could definitely do with a bit thorough service to fix a few minor and a couple of major issues.
Cosmetically it’s surprisingly good, see photos.
Main issues.
Intermittent problem with what seems like the synth section Low Pass Filter. It often seems completely fine, but occaisionally will start to distort and fluctuate in amplitude resulting in a very unpleasant crackle and then starts to lose function, the resonance stops working and only the top range of the filter cutoff seems to work. I think it may be linked to heat as it seems to happen more often when it has been left on for a while.
The synth section works seemingly much better when set to Band pass mode, though which Is how Ive been using it for years without any issue.
The noise generator in the synth section seems completely none functional, both as a tone and modulation source.
There are some issues with some of the faders/pots, as follows. .
The vibrato depth pot is missing its cap but functions fine.
Seems like the sustain parameter on the synth section is locked at maximum, so there’s no way to know if the decay functions correctly, but I’ve always managed to make do with it by using the release to create any pluck sounds I required, though maybe lacking slightly in precision compared to using the decay.
The two pots that control the amount of modulation assigned to the joystick are a bit temperamental and inconsistent while making adjustments but seem fine once in place and the joystick itself works great.
The octave blender in the string section seems very slightly off in the lower ranges when blending towards the lower octave.
The last photo shows the pots that have issues.

Working KORG POLY-61 Vintage 1980’s Synthesizer Keyboard
I have had this a long long time, and over the years it has seen more action than Axel Rose.
Over the years I have had hard Red Oak sides put on, as the chipboard that was originally there was just falling to bits as they all do.
I have not used it for over a year, but it is fully functioning. Just needs some switch cleaner in the volume knob as it is a little scratchy when turned. With time and use this should dissipate.
Also, where the modulation/Pitch bend joystick is, the panel does move a bit. It has done this since the sides were replaced but it does not affect playing or using of the joystick. It could use some shorter screws in it I think. Just never bothered with it as it did not detract from its use. Just thought I would mention it as someone may want to fix that.
