“Most of the capacitors on the main board have been replaced with low ESR 105C Panasonic, and I replaced the 1uf electrolytes with much improved film to further reduce noise in the overall circuit. I replaced the NJM4556D headphone opamp with JRC2068DD which has faster slew rate and higher bandwidth. All these updates added more clarity on the high end (while still keeping the 16 bit K4 character) and with the mods it sounds better than the original K4 when I did a direct comparison against the unmodified one.

I replaced the LCD display with a much better one and installed a 10k trimmer resister. To adjust the display brightness simply insert a screwdriver in the + slot of the trimmer resister and gently turn however I already adjusted it to the best luminosity. I have also performed this modification to my other K4s since it’s a great improvement over the original display.

I installed a new volume slider potentiometer. It is now much smoother sliding than the original. And I also installed the latest Version 1.4 OS chip, purchased new.

I have found much (but certainly not all!) of what the K4 is capable and will keep the patches I designed after the circuit upgrade.

There are individual buttons to select or mute each layer which means that parameter access/sound design is relatively quick. Immediate muting lets you quickly hear the layer you are working on which is important for sound design. The K4 excels at resonant transcendent beautiful digital crystalline pads and the resonance is so high and fizzy that it can devolve into sizzling distortion so I never use maximum but it makes for a very interesting unique sound. “Vintage Kawai K3 Digital Wave Memory Synthesizer.
I’m the original owner of this fine vintage synth. You probably know that its synthesis techniques are pretty unique, and that the keyboard has a great pressure after-touch for controlling any patch parameter by leaning into it. Comes with an extra memory module.
Everything works well, with the following exceptions:
The volume slider wasn’t working so it was bypassed. For live control you’ll want a volume pedal.
The headphone jack isn’t working, but should be repairable. The low E key is a little tilted after a fix, and plays fine.
All outputs, pitch wheel, and edit controls are great, and the sound is perfect.”

“The front of the keyboard has received water damage but this did not spread far inside. There is no sound out of the main outputs, but a distorted sound can be heard from the phones output. I suspect the issue is the volume control having water damage and therefore being stuck on 0. This could be an easy fix. The the main board comes from another synth and had an issue where every eighth played note would suffer from digital distortion. There are 2 broken black keys at the top of the keyboard and 1 cigarette burned white key, although the keyboard does not smell of smoke.”

“Really good condition inside and out as can be seen from the pictures, no signs of old age on circuit board, original Sanyo battery has no leaks and caps look good. (Battery may need replacing at some point).

Externally the device has a few minor marks and has two extra holes on the rear panel for wall mounting. Other than that looks good and sounds good.

The only thing I did find was 2 keys that will need attention. Please note the keys with the color stickers, the blue stickered key makes no sound and the brown sticker key needs to be pressed hard to make sound. Both keys were working when I bought it some 15 years ago but its been in my garage ever since and I am sure some dust has collected in the contacts over the years. This classic is in need of maintenance or repair and is for someone who has the passion and desire to spend an afternoon taking it apart and give it the maintenace and attention it needs. “Keyboard has been cleaned and fixed up by a professional. Slightly sticky on the bottom of the keyboard, Signs of age and wear on the entire keyboard in general. Missing the volume knob but it still works and is still usable. The Middle “G” Key was broken of and my friend epoxied it back, and tested it with a high intensity, it’s not coming off! Entire piece works great and he was suprised at how great this particular model sounds, as we fix these types often. Backup Memory and Battery very good, very clean inside. “In almost playable condition, as a few keys don’t work – unsure whether this is something internal, physical, digital etc. It was “gifted” to us in this condition, and seems to have about three screws holding it all together – not the greatest of signs. But it does fire up and play through the headphone socket, although I haven’t got any MIDI gear to test in and out functionality so bear in mind I can only verify that “yes it kinda works”
