“The synth is perfectly useful as a midi module and as a keyboard and “left-hand” controller, for this you can use any suitable sequencer or editor software (such as SoundDiver which was used for testing). The problems with the synth that can be completely ignored in a studio setting but are important for a live/standalone use are all in its front panel: buttons cannot be used for control without a computer software and data slider is missing its “handle”(although data entry buttons on the left double its function, so it can be ignored if working directly with synth). These front panel physical response problems can be repaired later if desired, or just continue to use it as a module/controller with a computer as described. There’s nothing better than a metal keyboard case because it’s tough and can take a beating so if you’re using this on the road you’ll be pleased with the durability.
The factory screws used to secure the top and keyboard have been replaced and half are missing. One of the top screw sockets has broke (see photo). As mentioned in the headline one octave of the keys are non-functional. This is the second octave section. “Excellent condition, should have cleaned before photos just needs a dust but it has been covered by a sheet for protection.
Lots of sound disks including original Ensoniq disks that sell on their own. Has all the detroit and house presets used by Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson etc. But can also be mind blowing when used for its synthesis as appose to the sampler (check youtube).
Has a chip out of one of the keys (pictured) replacements are still available though fully functional as is.

“Ensoniq ESQ-1 wave synthesizer. This unit was made in 1988. Analog/digital hybrid design combines digital waveforms and analog filters. Features include onboard sequencer, MIDI, multitimbral, ring mod, 61 keys, velocity sensitive, eight-note polyphonic. Power cable included, plus accessories.
Comes with the very rare Ensoniq CVP-1 volume pedal. Ordinary volume pedals do not work with this synthesizer. It requires this unique Ensoniq pedal, which is harder to find than the synth itself.
Also includes two cartridges. One is a ROM card with preset patches that cannot be overwritten. The other is a RAM card that can store your own patches. I currently have the RAM card and synth’s internal memory filled with third party, analog-style patches. The synth’s original factory preset patches can be easily found online and downloaded via MIDI.
Overall beautiful condition with only light wear. The only notable cosmetic flaw is a hole on the underside of one key (see picture). That has been there since I bought the synth in 2016 and it has never caused a problem or had any effect on the feel of the key while playing. The key is fully functional and responds just like all the other keys. It would be simple to install a replacement key sometime in the future when it is time to change the battery. The synth will probably be due for a battery change in the next year or so. That would be a good time to also replace the key.”

“This vintage synthesizer is in very good cosmetic condition and is working, though, it has a few issues / considerations: The floppy disc drive has not been tested, the temporary yellow colored disc used while transporting the keyboard takes some effort to stay in place (it will be taped in place for shipping purposes); the battery used by the synthesizer memory is drained and needs to be changed to store new programs; also, occasionally, the synthesizer displays a KEYBOARD CALIBRATION ERROR when booting up. This can be temporarily cured by performing what is described online as the “Heimlich maneuver” – laying the keyboard in your lap, placing hands on each end and twisting slightly in opposite directions to temporarily restoring the faulty connector in the middle of the keyboard. A more permanent solution is to hardwire the PC boards beneath the keyboard (see online directions for “Repairing an Ensoniq VFX showing Keyboard Calibration Error.) Also, the foam inside the case has deteriorated & will need replacement if used regularly. All keys and preset sounds are working. ” Click here to search for synths on eBay

“This ESQ-M has been serviced with New Battery, New Audio Output Jacks and the famous SQ80-M modification. All SQ-80 Waveforms are now present and selectable. The only function not implemented is the Envelope second release.

Love this synth. It is weird, rare and hard to explain to people who aren’t versed in different types of synthesis.
I’m the second owner of this unit, it still has the original Guitar center inventory price tag on the bottom, it has been in my non smoking studio since I aquired it in 2005/2006. It doesn’t have the original power supply but an uprated power supply that the original owner picked up to counter an issue some of the models had.
There are a few scuffs and dings on the metal casing. I’ve attached photos. Most of the serious ones are on the underside. There is also a scratch on one of the keys (see photos). Most of the blemishes came from the original owner, my studio was pretty mellow and heavy on rare exotic gear.”
