“I am the original owner from 1988 and primarily used it in home studio – never been used on a gig. The auction includes the keyboard with new, professionally installed battery, (2) E2Proms with 80 sounds on each one (easily worth $60 each if you can find them), original damper pedal, power cord, original manual, original install diskette and diskette with other sounds.

Check out the pictures and you will see that it is in VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT condition. A friend had an ESQ-1 and I started on the Mirage – lived about 15 minutes from Ensoniq office. There is plenty to explore and it makes for a great controller for studio/live use with MIDI IN/OUT/THRU. It is also built like a tank, has a diskette drive and Pitch Mod wheels. SQ-80 was the first Ensoniq product to feature their patented Polypressure Keyboard technology and had large display that is easy to navigate.

E key towards bottom of keyboard has a broken spring. Key is functional but will not stay in up position.
A# key near the center has an issue with the velocity sensitivity feature.
Frequently fails calibration test when starting. Says that all keys must be released. If the broken key is held up, it will pass most times. However, there appear to be other unknown issues that cause it to fail. Power cycling and trying again usually resolved this in our tests.
Low Battery warning is displayed upon turning on and passing calibration.
Intermittently during our tests random keys would be triggered and held, without touching. This will continue for a moment and then the system will ‘softlock’ allowing for no more control or changes to the menus or interfaces. Keyboard must be shut down to reset. After which “Soft Reset – System Error 01. Press any key to continue.” is shown before going into calibration mode.
There are what sounds like small loose parts rattling around inside the case.
All other keys appear to work properly other than the 2 mentioned above. Velocity sensitivity is working.
All analog outputs tested, sound is fine. MIDI and other functions untested.
Buttons and the 2 sliders to navigate menus and settings are working.

“Very fine Ensoniq SQ80 synth. Functions perfectly, no issues with buttons or sliders. All keys work prefectly, with polyphonic aftertouch working well across the deck. No issues with buttons. New battery and new main volume slider (from syntuar). The volume slider is quiet and smooth. This keyboard is a joy to play, the natural warmth is so appealing. The aftertouch is very expressive, you can route it for many possibilities. Bend wheel and modulation wheel function with no issues. MIDI in/out/thru . It comes loaded with and ready to play! This unit includes 2 TWO patch cartridges. 1 original stock cart. The 3.5 inch floppy drive does spin, but presents an error reading. I’ve never even tried to use it in the 20 years I’ve owned this synth, until now, when I tested it. Includes standard power cord. Digital waveforms and analog filters. It’s among a handful of late 80’s keys with digital waveforms and analog processing (I’m keeping my Kawaii K3). The ROM is stock. There are options for an ‘expanded’ ROM, but I just haven’t seen the need for it, the present waveforms are just fine. There are options for a floppy drive replacement, but again, I have not found the need for that either. I cherish this unit, but due to GAS (gear acquisition syndrome), I must let it go. The keyboard will be wrapped, padded, wrapped, boxed, then double boxed and padded more. There’s some really special patches on the 2 included carts. The emulated softsynth version is pretty faithful, but it can’t quite do the analog filtering like the real deal. This is the real deal.
