Ensoniq ESQ1 Project Machine

“Ensoniq ESQ-1 Digital Wave Synthesizer with analog filter. Recently purchased from the original owner as a “fixer upper” as after years in storage the unit wouldn’t power up successfully. The VFD display would flicker briefly and go no further. I’m assured the synth had only been used at home and not gigged. I suspected a power supply issue, possibly needing a recap or service. I ended up swapping the keybed to repair another ESQ-1 with yellow keys.

So this listing is for an unexpanded ESQ-1 (earlier metal body version) with an unconfirmed fault and flat backup battery. The sale includes the keybed from the other unit but with all white keys removed as I planned to whiten them. You will receive all of the white/yellow keys (undamaged) and springs to rebuild the keybed which worked without any issues. Photos show what “might” be displayed on the screen when powered up; most times it will just flicker briefly. This suggests a relatively simple and low-cost repair for a competent tech. Clean unit with no damage. Selling for spares or repair with no returns.”

” This auction is for a vintage Ensoniq SQ’R Synthesizer, Drums and Effects. The sticker on the side states 1991 (pictured).

I have owned this since probably 1994. I purchased equipment from a friend and this was part of it. The piano sounds are okay but the Organ sounds are actually really good. I don’t really remember the drum sounds. I have used this and it worked very well. I ran out of space for it in my rack in 2006 and it has been in a closet in my smoke free studio since then.

I’m an honest seller and I’m really ready to sell this as I need space in my studio (smoke free studio). I do not have a way to test it but it powers on and although some of the pictures make the display not look very good, it’s actually excellent. It has cosmetic stuff all over but nothing terrible like actual damage. Just normal wear from use and being in a closet for years and years.

“This is an Ensoniq ESQ-M module. I am the original owner (I purchased this in Miami FL in October 1987) but I have had it in storage since 1995.

I’ve uploaded a video so please review that carefully before bidding. Upon startup, the voltage low indicator is displayed so you will need to replace the battery. Additional, I did not open the unit to clean it, and the sliders also need to be cleaned. In one section of the video, you can see me move the data slider and you can see it jump around before settling down, and then during the demo of one of the sounds, it changed then changed back. I didn’t check all the functionality of it or all the presets.
At the time of uploading the listing, EBAY indicated the video would be reviewed and available in 48 hours. If the video is not listed, please check back.

I also don’t have an instrument cartridge for this, so the internal instruments are what are loaded on the Module. I don’t know if I modified any of them as I also owned an ESQ-1 and I did make my own sounds on that one. I see these listed and sold for between $400-$800. I’ve set the starting bid to be very competitive, and is a great opportunity for a reseller who will recondition this, or someone who can do their own repair and wants a vintage Ensoniq module. ”

“These are great synths. The Ensoniq esq-m is the rack mount version of the esq1, it’s the same synth except it doesn’t have the outdated sequencer or the terrible keybed. All of the good stuff and none of the bad!

There’s plenty of information about these online so you can look them up if you’re unfamiliar but at its core it’s a hybrid synth (digital waves and analog filters) with a simple modulation matrix, multi timbrality (layer/ split), responds to polyphonic aftertouch, etc. It’s a great sounding synth, think late 2nd era skinny puppy (too dark park and last rites in particular).

This one is in pretty good shape for its age but certainly not perfect. It has plenty of dings and scratches and what not. Also the data slider is really jumpy, I was just testing the synth and I could use the slider but I’d want to address it if I was keeping it since it’s very difficult to get it to any specific value. It might just be dirty (possibly fixed by cleaning and lubricating the slider) or it might need to be replaced. Everything else works as far as I can tell (midi, audio, display, buttons, volume slider is scratchy but working), I even replaced the internal battery a couple years ago so as long as it gets turned on now and then that should be fine for many many years, likely decades. It even has the rack ears!

I’m including two voice cards in this auction. One is a vintage “voice crystal 2” card full of presets (rom/ read only) and the other is a modern rewritable one (ram) made as a retrofit for this synth. The rewritable card has a very large capacity and is pre-loaded with a ton of patches but is freely writable which is essential with these older synths as their internal memory was pretty limited. ” Click here to visit listing on eBay
