“Here’s an amazing string synth I picked up I think in 2009. It’s an amazing synth, and I’m reluctant to let it go nut I need to clear out a lot of my equipment in preparation for a change of use for my studio.
It could definitely do with a bit thorough service to fix a few minor and a couple of major issues.
Cosmetically it’s surprisingly good, see photos.
Main issues.
Intermittent problem with what seems like the synth section Low Pass Filter. It often seems completely fine, but occaisionally will start to distort and fluctuate in amplitude resulting in a very unpleasant crackle and then starts to lose function, the resonance stops working and only the top range of the filter cutoff seems to work. I think it may be linked to heat as it seems to happen more often when it has been left on for a while.
The synth section works seemingly much better when set to Band pass mode, though which Is how Ive been using it for years without any issue.
The noise generator in the synth section seems completely none functional, both as a tone and modulation source.
There are some issues with some of the faders/pots, as follows. .
The vibrato depth pot is missing its cap but functions fine.
Seems like the sustain parameter on the synth section is locked at maximum, so there’s no way to know if the decay functions correctly, but I’ve always managed to make do with it by using the release to create any pluck sounds I required, though maybe lacking slightly in precision compared to using the decay.
The two pots that control the amount of modulation assigned to the joystick are a bit temperamental and inconsistent while making adjustments but seem fine once in place and the joystick itself works great.
The octave blender in the string section seems very slightly off in the lower ranges when blending towards the lower octave.
