Getting a VB Comms Error. I know I broke pins on the VB (voice board). I repaired those but maybe some others were damaged causing this error. Both boards did accept Kiwi firmware update properly so I know they are working somewhat.

Before VB Comms Error there was no sound.

Low F to C (8 keys) were not working during self-test but rest were properly triggering the voice assigner.

“Custom Roland JX-8P Polyphonic Analogue Synthesizer + PG-800 Programmer.

Roland JX-8P Bought from Reverb and barely used since. Here is the original sellers description. It’s Mint with just some light fading on the PG800 after a comprehensive and custom refit.

oCustom Roland JX-8P + Roland PG-800 + Roland M-16C Cartridge

Eprom OS 3.1, 220V AC

This JX-8P was in a sorry state when i got it (see last 4 pics), held together with wood threated screws, big scratches all around and a lot of rust on the frontpanel. Had 6 broken keys and the pitchbender was dangling.

The wood screws destroyed the inner bracket mounting holes which hold the side panels together so i had to drill these out and replaced them with 5mm Allen screws, which looks pretty awesome and the synth has its rigidity back.

Sanded the whole synth down to bare metal/plastic to remove any remaining rust, scratches. On the bender panel i filled in the holes drilled by a previous owner to hold the pitchbender.

Gave it a pro paint job in a contemporary light industrial grey which matches the knobs from the PG-800.

The PG-800 was build by myself using the original firmware/eprom and DAC. Pots are from Alps and the knobs are Sifam.

The graphics i did myself and have been screen printed.
Bought myself a expanded screen printing set so now i can print any design onto any surface. I’m pleased with the result.

All keys have been cleaned and polished and the keybed plays perfectly. Also removed the light scratches on the display with plastic polisher and that looks brandnew now.

All tacticle switches have been replaced with new ones ofcourse 🙂

“Roland JX-8P Analogue Synthesiser. All working 230V.

I got this synth in Japan quite a few years ago. Ive converted it to 230V, so no need for a transformer.

I did have the common issue with an occasional note hanging but this seems have been fixed after giving the key contacts a good clean. I have had no problems recently. The Aftertouch also works perfectly (a rarity on a JX8P!). All sliders and bender work as intended.

Cosmetically its pretty good. It does have a few marks and minor scratches but nothing major. The most significant point to note is that the membrane near preset 6 has a chip out of it. This does not effect operation in any way. The end caps are not split or cracked.

The JX-8P is a powerful analogue synth that, like many of the late 80’s had the hardware for parameter inputs replaced with a single slider and parameter selection. This made programing sounds a bit of a pain. The optional controller, the JP800 fixed this but it costs a fortune today (and is NOT included in this sale), but there is a clone now available, the DT-800 controller from DTronics at a fraction of the price. Well worth checking out if your reservation is lack of hardware parameter control.

Kind of getting out of playing so most of my stuff is leaving. When I got this, it was a hot mess, a moron had touch it but I was able to get everything fix and working properly unlike the moron. The unit has been completely cleaned on the inside, each key has been cleaned, key contacts cleaned. Everything works like it should now and it is remarkably in great condition for its age. all sliders work, tactile buttons are solid with very legible print on them.

The only thing I was not able to do for this synth was to find original screws for the side panels. The “Moron” put it back together with wood decking screws. Now I was able to round up a couple of original screws and couple that I was just able to get to work. It does need a few more. I live in a smaller city that just does not have parts, so I gave up looking. None the less it does not affect playability of this amazing vintage synth.
