“Up for grabs is a pair of Oberheim Matrix 1000 modules, both upgraded with the now-discontinued KiwiTechnics Kiwi-1000 v1.52 (the last supported version of the upgrade). Units will ship in a Gator 2U rack case.

Also included is a KiwiTechnics Patch Editor (also discontinued).

The upgrade modules have consecutive serial numbers, and the Oberheims have relatively close serial numbers. Because both units were meticulously serviced before the upgrades were installed, I have always considered these a “matched” pair. They are currently loaded with identical patch sets (2000 editable patches per unit!).

Matrix 1000 synths are mono-only: I used the pair to provide a lush stereo field by slightly detuning one unit and panning them hard-left/hard-right.

Servicing and upgrades were performed simultaneously by The Analog Lab.

Also included is a CD with all the firmware and documentation files that KiwiTechnics would give to me for both products. Please note that there is a version 1.60 of the Kiwi-1000 firmware, but I have been hesitant to use it because the product is now not supported.

“Has served well in my studio, but I just bought a Juno 106 and don’t use this anymore. Sounds perfect, 1000 sounds loaded. Happy to include a USB stick with sysex factory patches and matrix patches as well as the owner’s manual, schematics, and full patch listing if you like.

Note there is a very slight transformer hum you can hear if you put your ear next to it. It’s not in the line output which is quiet, just directly from the enclosure.

“This is a 1988 Oberheim product. It is the Matrix-1000. It is a rack mount analog sound module. I plugged this in and turned it on and all functions appear to work. All buttons and knob work as they should. I was unable to actually test it with a synthesizer, however, since all comes on when plugged in, I would say chances are very good that this is a working and functioning product. Please refer to the images for further detail of the cosmetics of this unit, it has blemishes on the top which I never noticed until it was slid out of the Studio Keyboard Rack! This Synth has remained in the studio rack since new purchase in 1987 and the sonic performance has not been an issue. This unit works and sounds amazing, I have used it on countless productions Gold/Platinum RIAA certified albums. I love the sounds of the strings, different timbres of drums and space sounds, its so full of sounds the Matrix 1000 has literally 1000 sounds in it but they are full patches and its one of Oberheim’s true true

“I purchased this synthesizer used in 2014. It is in perfect working condition, and very good cosmetic condition. It has some minor scuffing and wear in spots, and some of the Oberheim logo, “Matrix-1000” and “Volume” printing on the front-left side of the panel has faded/flaked off (see photo). It was in this condition when I purchased it, and has not sustained any more wear since then. It has been used in my smoke-free home studio and was never gigged by me.

I also updated the OS by installing a new OS V1.1.3 programmed eprom chip in 2014, which adds some MIDI control functionality and improves MIDI CC response time significantly (see photo). This enables you to use PC editing software to edit and save your own patches. I used a program called Ctrlr, you can google it for more info, there are probably several options at this point. This effectively turns the Matrix-1000 into an Oberheim Matrix-6.

Resoldered multiple capacitors and connectors. Performed hard reset. Attempted to reload some tracks from the library via MIDI, but the motherboard did not accept the communication. The motherboard or the keybed scanner could be damaged. Could not find schematics or tech support. Need another unit to compare against to solve cost effectively. Does have some rack rash and the rack ears are slightly bent. Also ever since I’ve owned this synth it’s only had 1 screw holding the body together this makes the select button sunk in a little bit. “I bought this Matrix 1000 and a Matrix 6r over 9 years. They both worked perfectly fine with all the presets and sounds working great. I plugged both of them back 2 years ago and noticed that they were no longer working as well as before, losing their original power and now both are barely getting a signal. I talked to a local synth repairman and he told me to change the battery and firmware. I honestly never got around to servicing these machines, so I am letting them go for a very fair price.
