“Vintage Ensoniq ESQ-1 Synthesizer with 2 Cartridges for Parts or Repair. Unit powers up and all of the keys produce sound. Modulator and Pitch controls work. The display shows only digits along the top and bottom edges. Pressing buttons produces digits on the display but the sound does not change. This is the plastic case version with the metal heat sink on the back. There is one internal and one external cartridge. The external cartridge is missing its label. Data slider is missing its cap. “Ensoniq ESQ-1 Digital Wave Synthesizer – 1985 Serial Number 12389 – Very lightly used and still works well with the following caveats: (1) The integrated battery needs to be replaced. A warning is shown when you turn it on and it won’t remember any changes to sounds programmed in the internal memory or sequences recorded with the builtin music workstation capabilities until this is done. (2) Once recently it failed to work at all and the display just blinked on and off and no sound was produced. This solved itself somehow, possibly a result of allowing the capacitors to discharge. If that is the case, the synth may need service at some point soon to replace bad capacitors, which is a common or even expected problem in vintage synths. Or it may also be due to a loose ribbon cable, another common fixable issue with these synths. Otherwise it works fine, including all buttons and keys, both synth and sequencer. I played with it for several hours before preparing this listing. Super cool 1987 hybrid synthesizer- Very clean- no smoke smell. Excellent condition overall, Everything works beautifully.

Has great large display & super easy to use sequencer with memory expansion cartridge and latest software version already installed. New lithium battery- although when first powered up, it shows low battery warning – but disappears after 1 second- comes with original box, packing, manual, ac cord, and foot pedal.

“This item has been refurbished twice since my ownership of it. The first repair was a problem with the display no longer lighting up, and this was due to a blown capacitor. The offending capacitor as well as the other old capacitors have all been replaced and the display now works perfectly. The second repair was replacing the lithium battery after getting a low battery warning (the lithium battery on this synth only lasts twenty or so years, and without it you cannot retain patches or sequences after powering down). The lithium battery installed was brand new and should give the synth at least 15 more years of memory. This model comes with software version 3.20 installed, program cartridge, power cord, and this version comes with the SQX-20 sequencer extender already installed, this allows 20,000 more events for the on-board sequencer. The only defect with this unit is a small hairline crack on the bottom of the F4 key, which is easily replaced and entirely cosmetic. I’ve included a picture of the defect. The display is a bit dim, and the keys have a yellow tint due to it sage, but works fine. Ensoniq are well known for producing top quality products, and this model is no exception. Everything still seems to work and it sound good (I’m a guitarist so that is not an expert opinion!).

There is a warning that the battery needs replacing – I can see these on batterys Ebay for around £15 so I think that would need to be changed if you wanted keep the internal sounds.
The casing has some scratches, particularly to the rear. I’ve shown the worst in the pics. ”

“Vintage Ensoniq ESQ-1 Digital Wave Synthesizer, Sequencer. This synth is in very good shape. Lots of great sounds on board. Includes one External Program cartridge. We did some basic testing and all appears to be working. We do not know if the battery is original or was replaced at any point in the past, but at this point it’s not an issue. Includes AC cable. As with any vintage electronic instrument, sold as-is. ”

” Working Ensoniq ESQ-1 digital wave/analog polyphonic synthesizer.
-Nice cosmetics for a nearly-40 year-old keyboard (see the pics). The keys themselves have yellowed, as happens on some plastics as they age. I’ve heard that the keys can be retrobright’ed to restore them to white (I’ll leave that to the buyer).
-All switches & sliders on front panel fully working
-Pitch & mod wheels working as expected.
-New battery
-Basic midi in & out functionality verified
-Sequencer & sustain foot switch functionality verified (foot switch is not included)

I played it, going through the patches and all sounds appropriate. All the keys trigger nicely with appropriate velocity.
