“Ensoniq ESQ-1 Digital Wave Synthesizer – 1985 Serial Number 12389 – Very lightly used and still works well with the following caveats: (1) The integrated battery needs to be replaced. A warning is shown when you turn it on and it won’t remember any changes to sounds programmed in the internal memory or sequences recorded with the builtin music workstation capabilities until this is done. (2) Once recently it failed to work at all and the display just blinked on and off and no sound was produced. This solved itself somehow, possibly a result of allowing the capacitors to discharge. If that is the case, the synth may need service at some point soon to replace bad capacitors, which is a common or even expected problem in vintage synths. Or it may also be due to a loose ribbon cable, another common fixable issue with these synths. Otherwise it works fine, including all buttons and keys, both synth and sequencer. I played with it for several hours before preparing this listing. “This item has been refurbished twice since my ownership of it. The first repair was a problem with the display no longer lighting up, and this was due to a blown capacitor. The offending capacitor as well as the other old capacitors have all been replaced and the display now works perfectly. The second repair was replacing the lithium battery after getting a low battery warning (the lithium battery on this synth only lasts twenty or so years, and without it you cannot retain patches or sequences after powering down). The lithium battery installed was brand new and should give the synth at least 15 more years of memory. This model comes with software version 3.20 installed, program cartridge, power cord, and this version comes with the SQX-20 sequencer extender already installed, this allows 20,000 more events for the on-board sequencer. The only defect with this unit is a small hairline crack on the bottom of the F4 key, which is easily replaced and entirely cosmetic. I’ve included a picture of the defect. “This iconic keyboard from the early 90’s is still sounding great today. It is a versatile workstation incorporating a wavetable synthesiser with 180 sounds and an onboard sequencer. It has 21 voices of polyphony, aftertouch, and a 3.5″ disk storage drive, and is great for use as a MIDI keyboard controller. It is highly programmable, and all settings can be saved to internal memory and disk. The internal battery has recently been changed. As well as provision for a foot switch, it also has a pedal CV socket, a headphone output, Auxiliary Left and Right outputs as well as Main Left and Right. It is in good condition, although it has one small nick in the front facia, and some of the legendry is fading. It comes in its original box with the Musician’s Manual. “Ensoniq VFX in good working order. Everything tested and working fine. Re-initialized to factory condition. Bright display, all jacks and buttons function properly. Keyboard link mod has been done to stop the known “keyboard calibration” error. Internal battery has been replaced with a battery holder to make battery replacement easy. Takes readily available CR2032. I just put a new battery in so should last for many years. Last one lasted about 10 years. B5 key has been replaced so its whiter than the rest. Some cosmetic blemishes as shown in the pictures. Mostly residue from stickers that I couldn’t get off with a quick Goo Gone wipe. A couple scratches. Look at pics to see full details. Included are the Ensoniq FSW-1 sustain pedal, a case, the power cable, and a CD-Rom I put together that includes the manual in PDF, a text document with Sysex transfer instructions, and a ton of Sysex banks and single patches that were collected over the years from various sources. Some of the patches are for the VFX SD so they don’t sound right but the overwhelming majority sound as they were intended. No cartridge included. -Nice cosmetics for a nearly-40 year-old keyboard (see the pics). The keys themselves have yellowed, as happens on some plastics as they age. I’ve heard that the keys can be retrobright’ed to restore them to white (I’ll leave that to the buyer).

-Pitch & mod wheels working as expected.

This is an awesome keyboard which really I want to keep and play with, but alas, I can’t keep everything!
I’ve tested this with the headphone jack and everything sounds brilliant. I’ll try and get round to trying the other outputs in the next few days, but if you need to check the midi you’ll need to bring your own equipment as I’m only a novice.
Screen display has a decent brightness to it and overall cosmetic condition is good minus the two snapped keys.
Cons – bottom key is dead and there are two buttons which have been pushed in which don’t function.
